Environmental Issues

California Drought:

The drought California is currently experiencing, while aided by overconsumption of water in big cities, is mainly caused by climate change. The amount of water avaliable to us is determined by the size of the snowpack in the high mountains, as when this water melts it trickles down to feed waterways throughout the state. California has had little rain, and therefore no snow for the snowpacks for 4 years. The lack of rain can be blamed on rising global temperatures, which prevent snow and ice from forming, and changing atmospheric pressures, which prevent rainstorms from occuring. These atmospheric pressures divert rain north, to Alaska, where the warm temperatures melt snow and cause avalanches. Unfortunately, this drought trend isn't a temporary issue. For over a hundred years, temperatures have been insidiously rising, and only now are they at the point where we can feel the effect. Any conseved water will help to slow the consequences of this drought.

Our Issues:

The California Drought

Growing up in California, we are very aware of the severe water shortage. The drought is definitely one of the factors that persuaded our group to tackle such an evident environmental issue in our society. The drought reminded us that individuals matter. We plan to teach fellow students about their role in the environment.

Educational Oportunities

While science is definitely an important part of the eduational system, in too many schools there is a lack of environmental science classes. While subjects like biology and chemsitry are required, environmental science is only an option. By allowing more children the opportunity to explore activites in environmental science, we hope to create a more sustainable planet with students eager to be leaders in environmental science fields.

Leadership is an important quality becuase it can apply to any aspect of life. It is necessary to teach new generations that being a leader in the classroom, at home or as a member in the environment demonstrates responsibility and initiative. These are essential life long learning tools.
